Riverfront Park and Main Street back on Council agenda

The last work session of the City Council proved that there are big decisions ahead regarding Riverfront Park.

And some of those decisions need to be made fairly soon.

There are two items on Tuesday’s meeting agenda related to the park. Council member Matt Kelly has submitted his own proposal for the park. And once again, the $99,656 contract for the concept design with design firm Rhodeside & Harwell is in front of the council.

“They have been advised they need to make a decision soon about the request for proposal,” said City Manager Beverly Cameron. He said his thought is to encourage the council to make a decision one way or the other.

Other business on the council agenda:

  • The council will also hear about the city possibly joining the Virginia Main Street program from some of the local organizers. Last week, the city’s Economic Development Authority made a financial commitment to the program. There is an item on the agenda for the city manager to sign off on the city’s application to the Virginia Main Street program. If the council approves that, the next step would be bringing a memorandum of understanding to the council that would be more like a formal contract. The program received $30,000 in the fiscal 2013 budget.
  •  The council will see two ordinances related to joining the Northern Virginia Cigarette Tax Board. One will be to formally joining the board and the other will be to adopt a uniform code Cigarette Tax ordinance under the board. At the council’s last work session, there was a presentation about joining the board. You can read more about that here.
  • The council will hold a public hearing about its workplan for the next two years. These goals and initiatives were originally agreed on at the council’s retreat in the Fall, but there were some tweaks by various council members.

Here is the full agenda for the meeting.

The work session begins at 5:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room of City Hall and the meeting begins at 7:30 p.m in council chambers of City Hall, 715 Princess Anne St..
