Fredericksburg School Board requests officer at middle school

The Fredericksburg School Board Monday night asked school division staff to send a request to the City Council for the return of a resource officer to Walker-Grant Middle School. Here’s how school divisions are dealing with security in the wake of the shooting in Newtown, Conn. 

There’s already a resource officer at James Monroe High School.

The request has to be sent to the City Council because it’s funded by the city and not by the school division and would not be paid for in the division’s operating budget.

At the January meeting, School Board Member Jannan Holmes asked the school staff for suggestions, including whether they should have a resource officer at the middle school. 

There’s also talk in the General Assembly about more school funding for school resource officers. 

But it would not come without cost.
