Council awards contract for VCR trail
Update: The work is expected to begin by April 1 and will take until the end of the year to complete. The first two areas, which are what is contracted to be built will be 1.7 miles.
Fredericksburg is one step closer to having another trail.
The City Council awarded the contract to build the first two phases of the Virginia Central Railway Trail to Faulconer Construction Company of Charlottesville.
The contract is for $1,765,950 and beat out three other bids to build the trail.
The 3.5 mile trail will begin at the east end of the Cobblestone development just south of the intersection of Lafayette Boulevard and Jackson Street and continuing west to Route 3 (area 1), then across Route 3 and west on Alum Springs Road through Alum Springs Park to U.S. 1 (area 2), then across U.S. 1 and continuing westward to a point near the Idlewild development (area 3).
Ultimately, the trail could extend on the railroad bed through Spotsylvania County into Orange County.
It will be 10 feet wide and be a paved asphalt trail for walkers and bikers.
The trail will be paid for through a variety of grants and the first two areas won’t require any local funding. The City Council Tuesday night also authorized city staff to apply for additional Virginia Department of Transportation funding to complete the third area of the trail.
It’s unclear when the work will begin.
