Walker-Grant Middle School students spread holiday cheer
Members of the National Junior Honor Society at Walker-Grant Middle School spent Tuesday afternoon spreading holiday cheer.
The 75 or so members of the organization took over the cafeteria of the school to make holiday cards for seniors at Home Instead.
Karen Ward, a sixth-grade inclusion teacher and the NJHS advisor, and Kerry Devine, another teacher (and City Council member) said every year the students do something for the holidays for the community.
Devine said at Christmas, many people always think of children in need and they decided to look at the other end of the spectrum.
They’re also always happy to find ways for students to do community service at the school because it doesn’t require driving anywhere, which makes it easier for the students.
The students were happy to be able to help.
“This might be the only thing they get for Christmas,” said Hans Doerr, a seventh grader.
Another student said it makes her feel good to make the cards because it’s doing something special.
The cards had all sorts of holiday decorations, including wreaths, snowmen and presents.
