Fredericksburg may get sculptural bench

Downtown Fredericksburg may soon be the recipient of a sculptural bench made by local artist Kevin Rodrigue.

The bench is about 10 feet tall, six feet wide and four feet deep, by Fredericksburg Arts Commission Chair Seth Casana’s estimates.

The sculpture is called “Aurora’s Bench” and is made of steel.

“The next step in the process is figuring out where the best location would be and then getting the proper permission from the city,” Casana said.

He said some factors to consider when it comes to location are: “someplace it won’t detract from the surroundings, where it can stand on its own and somewhere it will get a good number of traffic and people can sit on the bench.”

Rodrigue’s work is well-known throughout Fredericksburg. He made the signs at Bistro Bethem and Otter House, Casana said.

There’s a Fredericksburg Arts Commission meeting tonight in City Hall tonight at 7 p.m. You can also learn more about the Fredericksburg Arts Commission by visiting its new website or “liking” its Facebook page.

Here’s a video of Casana with the bench, where it is in Lorton.

What do you think of the bench? Where do you think it should go?
