Council preparing for October planning retreat

The Fredericksburg City Council will have a retreat on October 19 and 20 in the training room of the police headquarters.

At the retreat, the council will discuss its goals and initiatives for the next two years.

City Manager Beverly Cameron and the council discussed the retreat in a work session last week.

Cameron said the goals of the retreat are: strategic goal setting, review and refine and prioritizing goals, reviewing, adding, deleting and prioritizing initiatives and determining next steps.

He said the council currently has nine strategic goals and 43 initiatives. At the retreat, staff will give an update on where the city stands with the current goals and initiatives.

Martha Marshall, a consultant who has worked with the governments of Manassas, Alexandria, Williamsburg, Richmond and the country of Jordan, will be a facilitator for the retreat.

She will meet with each council member individually over the course of a few days.

Cameron said at the work session that the work done at the retreat is “critically important” and “really sets the stage for the staff’s workplan for two years and beyond.”

“I think we just have a great opportunity to refine the course of the organization and to get ready for a good two years together as a council,” he said.
