VCR trail work almost ready to be put up for bid

Fredericksburg officials are taking the final steps needed before putting the work for the Virginia Central Railway Trail up for bid.

The VCR Trail will be a 3.5-mile walking and bicycling path on part of the former Virginia Central railroad bed.

It will  start near Essex Street at the eastern end of the Cobblestone Square development just off Lafayette Boulevard, and continue west along Lafayette Boulevard, across the Blue and Gray Parkway, then along Alum Spring Road and through Alum Spring Park and across Jefferson Davis Highway, then to a point just east of Interstate 95.

Ultimately, the trail could extend on the railroad bed through  Spotsylvania County into Orange County.

Doug Fawcett, director of public works for the city, said that the city is getting ready to advertise for bids at the end of September.

He said after bids are received, he will select one to take to the City Council for approval.

The budget for the project is $2.5 million, he said.

The project will be completed in four phases and will be bid accordingly.

The first phase will be from Essex Street to the Blue Gray Parkway, the second will be the Blue Gray Parkway to Jefferson Davis Highway, the third will be  Jefferson Davis Highway to Idlewild and the fourth will be  Idlewild to I-95.

The timeline for the project is to award the bid by the end of November, start construction in January and have it completed next November.

Here’s a link to a powerpoint presentation given at a public hearing about the project in April. It has a few more details and a bigger view of the map.
