American Canoe Association adds mural

The American Canoe Association, which has its national headquarters on Hanover Street, is adding a mural to its building this week.

Local artists Deborah Booth and Gary Duquette were commissioned by the group to paint the mural. The artists were selected after the group liked the work they did in the (now closed) Trolley Stop Deli on Caroline Street.

“The theme of our mural is symbolic of the Rappahannock, running form the confluence to the Chesapeake Bay, with all aspects of the Rappahannock River in between,” said Candy Patten, an insurance coordinator with the group.

“We chose this because the river is a wonderful historical part of the city, as well as a great venue for all types of paddle sports,” she said.

Here’s what the new mural looks like.

The mural is being funded partially by the group and partially from a $2,000 JumpStart! Grant from the city’s Economic Development Authority.
