Mayor Greenlaw to welcome first lady
Before first lady Michelle Obama speaks Friday at the University of Mary Washington, Fredericksburg Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw will welcome her to the city.
Tickets to the event are no longer available.
Greenlaw said she received a call from an official with the Organizing for America – Obama for Virginia office in Richmond Monday asking if she could be at the event, and another call Thursday asking if she would welcome the first lady.
“I’m excited to do it,” Greenlaw said. “I’m very excited to do it. I’m pleased that she’s chosen to visit Fredericksburg and the University of Mary Washington. I’m excited to be asked to do it and excited to tell her a little bit about Fredericksburg.”
Greenlaw said she’ll only speak for a minute or two before the first lady.
She said it’s appropriate that the first lady is visiting Fredericksburg.
“We are the crossroads of history and this great democracy had roots here,” she said. ”She will be at the University of Mary Washington, whose son was our first president, which I think is very appropriate as well.”
