Fredericksburg planners put off vote on Telegraph Hill

The Fredericksburg Planning Commission pushed off a vote Wednesday to approve final plans for the 79-home Telegraph Hill subdivision planned for Lafayette Boulevard.

The Planning Commission approved preliminary plans in April 2011 for the development regarding the layout of homes and entrance off Lafayette.

The plans have spurred controversy over traffic because the entrance to the 29-acre site is almost directly across Lafayette from the southern entrance to Lee Drive and the Civil War Park.

Russ Smith, the superintendent of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, spoke at the meeting, along with several others with concerns about the plans and the impact on traffic.

The commission will continue the public hearing on the subject at its next meeting on July 25.

Planning Commissioner Shawn Lawrence was the only one to vote against holding action off until the next meeting.

“I don’t think there is a perfect way to come out with a design that is satisfactory to everybody,” he said.

“I can’t see holding the developer responsible for solving our traffic problems.”
