UPDATE: 2:56 p.m. (From Fredericksburg Police Spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe) The driver involved in this morning’s accident on Carl D Silver Pkwy was Dajour Betancourt, 20, of Ruther Glen. Betancourt has been charged with reckless driving and operating a vehicle with an expired inspection.
UPDATE: 11:50 a.m.: (From Fredericksburg Police Spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe)
A motor vehicle crash closed down the 1400 block of Carl D Silver Pkwy this morning at 9:10 am when the driver of a black Nissan lost control of his vehicle and struck a power pole. According to witnesses, the Nissan driver was traveling toward Plank Road on Carl D Silver Pkwy at a high rate of speed when his vehicle went from the right travel lane across the left travel lane and partially into the center median, where it struck a tree. The impact with the tree caused the vehicle to rotate onto its right side, and the car continued moving on its passenger side wheels until it struck a concrete light pole in the median.
Both the vehicle and the pole were significantly damaged. The driver, who was restrained only by a shoulder belt but not by his lap belt, was unconscious at the scene and transported to Mary Washington Hospital with severe injuries. At last report, the driver is expected to survive. The driver is 20 years old and from Ruther Glen.
Due to the instability of the concrete pole, all lanes of Carl D Silver Pkwy were shut down for approximately 2 hours while representatives from Dominion Power stabilized the pole and a tow company cleared the Nissan and debris from the accident site.
The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending against the drive
UPDATE: 10:55 a.m.: All lanes of Carl D. Silver Parkway are now open.
UPDATE 10:25 a.m.: There’s no power outage, the danger is from the instability of the pole and the power company will have to fix it, said Fredericksburg Police Department Spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe.
From Fredericksburg Police Department Spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe:
All lanes of Carl D Silver Pkwy in Central Park are currently closed in the 1400 block (near Ethan Allen) for a significant traffic accident involving a single vehicle into a power pole. The male driver of the Nissan involved in the crash has been transported to the hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.
Due to the instability of the pole, all lanes of traffic are closed and vehicles will be diverted through the shopping center parking lots. Dominion Power has been notified and is responding to the scene.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area.
An officer trained in accident reconstruction is being called in to assist in the investigation. Carl D Silver Pkwy is expected to be shut down for at least an hour.
