The council approved an ordinance Tuesday night that will require getting a certificate of appropriateness from the city’s Architectural Review Board before demolishing a structure in response to an unsafe structure notice. Previously, the unsafe structure notice trumped the ARB’s position.
This comes after the General assembly adopted legislation initiated by the city that would permit localities to give more options before a structure faces demolition.
It also follows a memorandum of understanding between the city and Historic Fredericksburg Foundation that would prevent situations like the demo of 1407 Caroline St. from happening again.
Here are a few other highlights from Tuesday night:
- The council approved wine sales and tastings at the farmer’s market at Hurkamp Park.
- The council appointed Donald Skinker, Holly Hubbell and Pennie Rose to the Wetlands Board, Karen Kallay to the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board, George Foster to the Recreation Commission and Zachery Hatcher to the Board of Social Services.
- The council approved rezoning changes to downtown. (more to come on this later)
