“Occupy” protesters to come to Fredericksburg

A group called “”Occupy the Highway – Richmond to DC” is expected to come to Fredericksburg tomorrow and stay through the weekend. They’ll meet up with the Occupy UMW group, while they occupy the Board of Visitors meeting to take place at the university this weekend.

The group, which appears to be just a handful of people, began their walk from Richmond to meet the Occupy DC group next week.

There are several “teach-ins,” potlucks and protests planned for Friday through Saturday, according to the “Occupy Mary Wash” Facebook page and the “Organize Occupy Fredericksburg” Facebook page.  The groups are posting updates on their location and progress primarily through social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Several law enforcement agencies, including Fredericksburg police, state police, UMW police, Stafford police, Prince William Police and representatives from the Rappahannock Regional Jail met this morning to be ready in case the activity gets larger and there’s disruptive behavior, according to Fredericksburg police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe.

“We’re aware of it. At its present level of activity, it does not seem to be a concern,” she said. “If that changes we are ready to respond appropriately.”
