City Staff and Council to tour Spotsy Courthouse

Fredericksburg’s City Staff and City Council will take a tour of the Spotsylvania Courthouse this afternoon.

The $21.9 million courthouse opened at the beginning of September.

The courthouse has three state-of-the-art courtrooms, the clerk’s office and adequate space for judges and their staffs and an enhanced security system.

There is also space for a fourth courtroom if needed in the future and large areas for jurors, prisoner security and overflow courtroom spectators if the 134-person seating capacity is exceeded.

The 60,000-square-foot building gives its occupants three times more space than they had in their previous location.

The city is preparing to build its own new courthouse facilities, expected to open in Fall 2014.

The 78,500-square-foot courthouse will be built at 701-707 Princess Anne St., where the current juvenile and domestic relations court is housed.

It will house the circuit court and clerk, the general district court and clerk, and the Sheriff’s Office.

The existing General District Court Building–across Charlotte Street from the new site–will be renovated to house the juvenile court and auxiliary court service functions.

The city announced that the design-build team of First Choice Public-Private Partners ranked the highest among the proposers to build the courthouse and is currently working out a contract with the company.
