VOTE: Which one do you like the best from the options below?

Here is what the existing ward boundaries look like:

HERE’S OPTION 1:

The changes would be:

The area on the west side of Route 1, southeast of Hazel Run including Kings Mill Townhomes, Kendalwood Apartments and Townsend square apartments would go to Ward 3. (They are currently in Ward 1). Crestview apartments, Heritage Park, a portion of Hills at Snowden and The Preserve would go from Ward 1 to Ward 4. The Fairview neighborhood would go from Ward 3 to Ward 2. The southwest side of Charles Street from Fauquier Street to the canal would go from Ward 4 to Ward 2. The Jackson Street area, west of Prince Edward Street between Hanover Street and Lafayette Boulevard would go from Ward 4 to Ward 3. The southeast side of Lafayette Boulevard between Hazel Run and Charles Street, including Cobblestone Square condominiums and apartments would go from Ward 4 to Ward 3.

HERE’S OPTION 2:

The changes would be:  

Normandy Village would go from Ward 1 to Ward 2. The area on the west side of Route 1, southeast of Hazel Run including Kings Mill Townhomes, Kendalwood Apartments and Townsend Square Apartments would go from Ward 1 to Ward 3. The Altoona subdivision and Huntington Hills (west side) would go from Ward 1 to Ward 3. The area north of Fall Hill Avenue, west of I-95 including River Woods apartment townhomes, The Haven and Celebrate Virginia would go from Ward 1 to Ward 4. The Fairview neighborhood would go from Ward 3 to Ward 2 and the Fredericksburg industrial park including the Thurman Brisben Center would go from Ward 3 to Ward 4.

HERE’S OPTION 2A:

The changes would be:

Normandy Village would move from Ward 1 to Ward 2, The area on the west side of U.S. 1, southeast of Hazel Run including Kings Mill Townhomes, Kindalwood Apartment and Townsend Square Apartments. The Altoona Subdivision, Hingtington Hills (west side) would go from Ward 1 to Ward 3. The area north of Fall Hill Avenue, west of I-95 including River Woods Apartment Townhomes, The Haven and Celebrate Virginia would go from Ward 1 to Ward 4.  The Fairview neighborhood would go from Ward 3 to Ward 2 and the area between Hanover STreet and Charlotte Street between Weedon Street and Lee Avenue and the Fredericksburg Industrial Park including the Thurman Brisben Center would go from Ward 3 to Ward 4. The five blocks on the west side of Charles Street from Fauquier Street to Ford Street would go from Ward 4 to Ward 2.

HERE’S OPTION 2B: (the one referenced in the story in the FLS that some members favored)

The changes would be: Normandy Village would move from Ward 1 to Ward 2, The area on the west side of U.S. 1, southeast of Hazel Run including Kings Mill Townhomes, Kindalwood Apartment and Townsend Square Apartments. The Altoona Subdivision, Hingtington Hills (west side) would go from Ward 1 to Ward 3. The area north of Fall Hill Avenue, west of I-95 including River Woods Apartment Townhomes, The Haven and Celebrate Virginia would go from Ward 1 to Ward 4.  The Fairview neighborhood would go from Ward 3 to Ward 2 and the area between Hanover Street and Charlotte Street between Weedon Street and Lee Avenue and the Fredericksburg Industrial Park including the Thurman Brisben Center would go from Ward 3 to Ward 4. Four blocks between Charlotte Street aned Hanover Street from Lee Avenue to Prince Edward Street and Five blocks on the west side of Charles Street from Fauquier Street to Ford Street would go from Ward 4 to Ward 2.

HERE’S OPTION 2C:

The changes would be: Normandy Village would move from Ward 1 to Ward 2, The area on the west side of U.S. 1, southeast of Hazel Run including Kings Mill Townhomes, Kindalwood Apartment and Townsend Square Apartments. The Altoona Subdivision, Hingtington Hills (west side) would go from Ward 1 to Ward 3. The area north of Fall Hill Avenue, west of I-95 including River Woods Apartment Townhomes, The Haven and Celebrate Virginia would go from Ward 1 to Ward 4. 

The Fairview neighborhood would go from Ward 3 to Ward 2 and the area between Hanover Street and Charlotte Street between Weedon Street and Lee Avenue and the Fredericksburg Industrial Park including the Thruman Brisben Center would go from Ward 3 to Ward 4.

Five blocks on the west side of Charles Street from Fauquier Street to Ford Street would go from Ward 4 to Ward 2.

HERE’S OPTION 3:

The changes would be: The area on the west side of Route 1, southeast of Hazel Run including Kings Mill Townhomes, Kendalwood Apartments and Townsend Square apartments go from Ward 1 to Ward 3. The Altoona subdivision and Huntington Hills (west side) go from Ward 1 to Ward 3.  Eagle Village and Mary Washington Hospital Campus (northern half) go from Ward 1 to Ward 4. Normandy Village (including the fairgrounds) and Stratford apartments go from Ward 1 to Ward 4. The Fairview neighborhood goes from Ward 3 to Ward 2. The Fredericksburg Industrial Park, including the Thurman Brisben Center go from Ward 3 to Ward 4. Fourteen blocks of the downtown area between Charlotte Street and Canal Street go from Ward 4 to Ward 2. The Jackson Street area, west of Prince Edward Street, between Hanover Street and Lafayette Boulevard go from Ward 4 to Ward 2.

Here’s a timeline of the redistricting process:

September 27, 2011 – Continuation of City Council Public Hearing and First Reading of Ordinance, City Council Chambers, 7:30 P.M.

  • October 11, 2011 – City Council Second Reading, City Council Chambers, 7:30 P.M
  • October 2011 – Submission to the Department of Justice (DOJ)
  • January 31, 2012 – Anticipated DOJ clearance granted
  • March 2012 – Filing deadline to run for public office
  • May 1, 2012 – At-large City Council, Mayoral, and School Board member elections

The maps are also posted in City Hall for your review. There will be a public hearing at the next City Council meeting and the council will select its preferred option.
