Matt Kelly considering a run for City Council

The election isn’t for almost a year, but former Fredericksburg City Councilman Matthew Kelly said he’s considering running for a seat on the City Council.

Kelly said his biggest issue with the current council and city staff is that they aren’t proactive enough about getting information out to the public.

“When I read the piece where council members referred all questions on a $40 million  project to staff, we’ve got a bit of a problem,” he said.

Kelly represented Ward 3 on the City Council from 2002 to 2010.

He has been vocal on a number of city issues since he left office, notably the proposed courthouse facilities and the Economic Development Authority’s  incentives program to bring businesses into the city, among other things.

“I see the need and importance of community involvement and discussion on every decision,” he said.

Kelly graduated from the  Mary Washington College in 1976 and became active in city politics in 1982.

There are three seats up for grabs in the May 2012 election—the seat belonging to Mayor Thomas Tomzak and the at-large seats held by Vice-Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw and Councilwoman Kerry Devine.
