Legislation similar to measures introduced in Florida after the Casey Anthony trial could come to Virginia.
State Sen. Edd Houck, D-Spotsylvania County, said yesterday that he will introduce a bill to enact “Caylee’s Law.”
The law would make it a felony if a parent, guardian or caretaker of a minor child fails to notify law enforcement officers within 24 hours of when a child is discovered missing.
The law is being considered in 32 other states.
“Protecting children who are abused, exploited or missing must be a top priority of our state’s criminal justice system,” Houck said in a press release.
The bill was introduced in Florida days after Anthony was found not guilty of murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. Caylee was missing for 31 days before her mother reported her gone.
A Facebook group with almost 20,000 people has sprung up in support of the effort, calling for a federal law. A petition on the website Change.org has collected more than 1.2 million signatures as well.
