Mayor blasts school leaders in council meeting

Last night the City Council meeting took an interesting turn when it came time to talk about the schools portion of the budget. Mayor Tom Tomzak blamed the school administration for the high dropout rate. You can read the story that ran in today’s paper here.

What do you think?

Very sad day that the mayor chose to blast the school administration at the budget meeting instead of taking his concerns directly to the administrators.

This mayor is an embarrassing representative of the city. His behavior in this meeting and elsewhere is offensive. I doubt he’s ever been in any of the schools. What makes him the expert on dropouts?

Don’t know about y’all but I’m getting tired of the Mayor’s lectures and finger wagging over problems he blames on everyone but himself. This guys a do-nothing and maybe a few cards short of a deck. People in glass houses…just sayin

Apparently the School Board was caused by the Mayor to recognize that 18.2 percent dropout rates, or over twice the State average was something the School Board chose to ignore as being a problem, until found out.

So who should be more embarrassed? The Mayor, School Board or the citizen population of Fredereicksburg? People in “glass houses?” Apparently there is an abundance of elected officials and leaders to go around.

The problem is about dropout rates, not hurt feelings, more excuses and waiting to be found out in lieu of shared and designed progress that so far has remained a secret until now.

Nobody is proud of a drop out rate on 18.2%. The question is how you bring that statistic to the public’s attention. Being loud, obnoxious and accusatory in a public forum; reacting knee-jerkishly without context or facts is not going to solve anything. The Mayor’s reaction was loutish, disrespectful, and undignified. If he cant censor his big mouth maybe he should think about finding another job.
