Redistricting is a tough process, but computers make it easier

Last night the city held a public meeting about the redistricting process it’s currently going through. Based on the results of the 2010 U.S. Census, Fredericksburg has grown 26 percent since 2000, bringing its population to 24,286 people.

Ward 1 has had the most growth, with 8,319 residents, a 73.6 percent increase since 2000. Ward 4 had the second highest increase with 28 percent more residents, bringing its population to 5,388 residents. Its the city’s majority-minority ward, and will stay that way throughout the redistricting process.

The process has several steps that the city will take over the next several months, including meeting with the school board and presenting final plans to City Council before submitting them to the U.S. Department of Justice in October.

Here is the story that ran in today’s paper with more information.

Although the process won’t be easy, it’s easier than in the past because city officials can use specialized computer software to do it.

On a lighter note, I sat down with Ann Kloeckner the new director of Rappahannock Legal Services today and we chatted about her background and goals for the agency. You can read all about it in tomorrow’s paper.
