Morning Buzz – Feb. 4, 2011

A daily digest of what’s going on in Fredericksburg, and what news from elsewhere is relevant here. Send suggestions to ebattle@freelancestar.com.

The ongoing renovations at Castiglia’s, which we detailed here, could be granted a five-year, $26,500 incentives package. The deal is on the City Council’s agenda for next week. In December, when Longstreet’s was awarded a $46,000 incentives deal for its William Street restaurant, Councilman George Solley asked whether incentives are really necessary when a business has already taken irrevocable steps to advance its plans. We’re going to look more closely at that question in Saturday’s paper, so stay tuned.

From a blog post back in August 2008 on incentives. The orginial idea involved both planning and recruiting.

I agree with Mr. Solley on this point. The City needs to stop awarding incentives to businesses for activities that they are already undertaking. It is poor management of public funds, especially when there have been recent discussions of raising tax rates and questioning the continued ability to fund operating as an Independent City.
