Tulip poplar coming down today
A contractor hired by the city schools began the process of taking down the century-and-a-half-old tulip poplar that sits in the middle of James Monroe High School’s athletic complex around 7 a.m. today. This is a delicate and slow process that will probably continue over the next two days.
A small number of individuals with connections to the school strolled in and out of the area as the crews began their work, some sipping coffee on the bleachers while sharing memories of the tree and its place on the school’s campus, which has changed over the years as the old JM was knocked down to build a new one.
If you’re waiting for a lumberjack in a flannel shirt to come in and take an ax to the giant trunk and yell, “Timber!” don’t hold your breath. This tree is coming down branch by branch, top to bottom.
Pick up tomorrow’s print edition of The Free Lance-Star for more on the removal and thoughts from some JM alumni on what can be done to preserve the tree’s memory.
