Expect lane closures on U.S. 1 at Eagle Village for the rest of the week

Motorists should expect alternating lane closures on both the northbound and southbound sides of U.S. 1 near College Avenue tomorrow through Friday. One lane in each direction will remain open at all times. This should be the last round of lane closures related to the pedestrian bridge that is being built to connect the main UMW campus with the dorms and office space at Eagle Village. Here’s the release from public works:

The work requiring lane closures on Jefferson Davis Highway (US Route 1) on the Eagle Village pedestrian bridge project (between College Avenue and Mary Washington Boulevard) has entered its final phase. For the remainder of this week (Tuesday, June 22 – Friday, June 25), there will be alternating lane closures to permit final work to be performed. One lane will remain open to through traffic in both directions (north and south) at all times during this period. Weather permitting, all work affecting traffic flow on Route 1 will be completed by Friday (June 25) afternoon and no further lane closures will be required related to this project.

Motorists are urged to reduce their speed, look for detour signs and watch for workers and equipment in the roadway while traveling through this area during this period.

In other traffic-related news, Fredericksburg’s City Council will hold a final public hearing tomorrow night on whether to join Spotsylvania County in the George Washington Regional Toll Road Authority. Kelly Hannon has good background on this issue on her blog, and explains that this is the “speak now or forever hold your peace” portion of the development process for this authority.
