Morning Buzz – April 22, 2010

A daily digest of what’s going on in Fredericksburg, and what news from elsewhere is relevant here. Send suggestions to ebattle@freelancestar.com.

The Silver Cos. have unveiled their latest idea for the Fredericksburg Hardware property: 19 high-end townhomes, and possibly a four-story mixed-use commercial building. Read Cathy Jett’s report here, and read Bill Freehling’s report on how that part of the housing market has performed lately here.

Just a thought–maybe mo-peds aren’t such a great idea on the canal path? I saw one zoom by me, my 26-pound dog, several runners and strollers this morning on the narrow path. Is that really a good mix?

The deadline to mail in your census form passed last Friday. Fredericksburg so far is up to 70 percent participation in the census, which is just one percentage point lower than the city’s final participation rate in 2000. Census takers will start visiting households May 1, so that number is likely to rise.

I thought code didn’t allow motorized vehicles on the Canal Path?

Sec. 66-141(A)(7) appears to prohibit parking or operating motor vehicles within the waterworks right of way (which includes the canal path).

No definition is provided in the code for motor vehicles . . . so maybe that is the exception . . . perhaps we need to tighten this up, or be more explicit in who and what can use the path. This seems completely appropriate, especially with the upcoming proliferation of trailways along the river and elsewhere within the City.
