Morning Buzz – March 18, 2010
A daily digest of what’s going on in Fredericksburg, and what news from elsewhere is relevant here. Send suggestions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Since everybody spent yesterday drinking green beer, let’s take a moment this morning to talk about health. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin put out a study this week ranking Virginia’s municipalities based on a number of health factors and outcomes.
Fredericksburg ranks 109 out of 132 localities in health outcomes such as premature death and low birthweight. It ranks 90th in health factors, which include smoking and obesity rates, violent crime, high school graduation and how many people have health insurance.
In both categories, Fredericksburg ranks far lower than all of the other counties in its planning district (Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline, King George).
