The snow report
You can read our story about the city’s review of its snow removal operations here.
You can read the full report distributed last night here.
A few notes from last night that didn’t make it into the story:
"We understand that results are what count, and not just effort, but … there was no lack on the effort side," Public Works Director Doug Fawcett said. "You really haven’t worked under stressful conditions until you have stared at a snow covered street for 12 hours moving at 12 miles an hour knowing there are curbs under there and it’s going to jar your teeth out if you hit them."
Training is easier said than done, Fawcett said. "Unlike a police officer who can go to a firing range, … there really is no substitute to trying to plow 12 inches of snow off a roadway … that’s a very difficult thing to simulate in a training situation."
He said they would try to find ways to give employees training, like letting them drive around with the plow attachments on trucks in the summer to get used to them.
A training opportunity might be on its way this weekend. The weather forecast is absolutely miserable.
