A daily digest of what’s going on in Fredericksburg, and what news from elsewhere is relevant here. Send suggestions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Virginia superintendents held a press conference in Richmond yesterday to emphasize the damage they believe proposed state budget cuts could do to education in the state. Read Chelyen Davis’s story here, and read the remarks from the event, including a survey completed by about half of the state’s school chiefs about what budget-cutting measures they are considering, here.
The story touches briefly on the composite index, the state funding formula for schools. Former Gov. Tim Kaine proposed freezing that formula this year, but Fredericksburg and many Northern Virginia localities are against that, because this is the first year in a long time that changes to that formula would actually benefit them. The Roanoke Times, in a part of the state that does not stand to benefit from the changes, published an editorial this week urging the state to go forward with the formula changes as a matter of fairness to all parts of the state.
