What’s going on? It’s August.

This is my seventh August as a local government reporter, and boy do things slow down. We are using the time to get to a few long-term projects, but in the meantime, here are a few news bits:

- Spotsylvania Supervisors will hold a public hearing tonight on whether the county should join the VRE. Dan Telvock reports here that a yes vote looks likely. Remember when Fredericksburg was talking about putting its river land in a conservation easement? Plenty of county residents came to that hearing to tell the city what to do, so if you’re in that lull before Tom DeLay makes his debut on Dancing With The Stars, the Holbert Building has live entertainment.

- The Fredericksburg Police Department is seeking national accreditation, and as part of that process, a team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies will be visiting the department Aug. 29. The team will take public comments on the department during an information session Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. We’ll have more on the accreditation process in next week’s Spotsy and City Extra section. Read the department’s release on this here

Is there a consensus, general or otherwise, on whether Spotsy joining VRE is better or worse for the city and its residents?
