Downtown update: Pastries, mattresses and salsa dancing

We wrote back in March about Eileen’s plans to move from The Chimneys several blocks up Caroline Street to the former Unitarian Universalist Church building. The restaurant is now open in its new location, complete with prints of historic Fredericksburg buildings and a photo album in front detailing the renovation of the old church.

Eileen’s old home was across from the site where the Courtyard by Marriott is getting close to opening. You can’t have a hotel without beds, and today was mattress delivery day at the site.

Speaking of downtown additions, I just got off the phone with Jeanette Reyes, who has been working with friends and family members to open Las Palmas Cafe in the Caroline Street location that Olde Towne Wine and Cheese Deli used to occupy. Reyes said the restaurant will be a Puerto Rican cafe, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner for sit-down meals. She also plans to keep the deli portion of Wine and Cheese open for takeout meals. She said she and her family have been working in the space for the past several weeks to get it ready to open June 1.

Reyes has lived in this area since 2001, and has been doing catering and promoting Latin entertainment and salsa dancing and lessons through her business, Salsabor Productions. She plans to bring live entertainment, including music and Latin dancing, to Las Palmas on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

"We’re very excited, we cannot wait to open up and we hope and pray that we’re able to make it as busy as it was before," Reyes said.
