Cigarettes, pork and crowds

- Remember when the City Council members asked the General Assembly to let them decide whether to ban smoking in public places? Chelyen Davis has a story today about how some Fredericksburg residents weighed in on a bill that would ban smoking in bars, restaurants and other businesses all over the state. Turns out the owners of Frederick’s restaurant downtown, which is non-smoking, are on-board. Plenty of other opinions on the bill can be found in the comments below the story.

- In case you missed it last week, Fredericksburg has submitted this list of potential stimulus-worthy projects to the U.S. Council of Mayors. That group is making a giant wish-list of local government projects from around the country that they think should be considered for stimulus funding. Two editorials on lobbying efforts like this ran in Virginia papers today. Here‘s one from the Virginian-Pilot, and here‘s one from The Free Lance-Star.

- Interesting story in the Post today about the reliability of D.C.’s official estimate that 1.8 million people attended Tuesday’s inauguration. I don’t understand how you go about accurately counting a crowd this large, but on the ground it felt like there were 1 TRILLION people there. I went home and watched some of the coverage on television. I was apparently not at the same event that MSNBC and CNN attended.
