Wings on the Water now city property
According to the December deeds list, the city closed on its $925,000 purchase of the Sophia Street property that houses Wings on the Water on Dec. 18. As we reported here, the City Council had voted to move forward with a condemnation suit to take this land by eminent domain.
It turns out the lawsuit wasn’t necessary, though. After the council vote, the owner of Wings on the Water, which rents the property, signed an agreement stating that his lease would terminate when the city bought the property. That freed up the owner to sell the property, according to City Attorney Kathleen Dooley. This means no Jan. 15 court date for the city on this matter.
This also means that the city now owns the three formerly private properties that it had set out to buy to start building a riverfront park. Actual work on the park won’t start in the foreseeable future, as the city has to push back several capital projects to deal with its budget problems.
