Pre-Halloween notes

- Looking for the cannon that used to be in front of the Fredericksburg Area Museum at Princess Anne and William streets? Newport News has it. Find out why in this story by Susannah Clark. (And no, it wasn’t taken away because of the Sarah Palin rally.)

- If you’re dying to run 13.1 miles, but can’t wait ’til next May, there’s still time to train for the Blue & Gray Half Marathon Dec. 14. This will be the eighth running of this race, and now that the Marine Corps has brought a spring half marathon to town, Blue & Gray organizers have updated their marketing materials. This year’s race is being billed as, "The Original Half Marathon of Fredericksburg, with Better Food, Cooler Weather, Lower Entry Fee, Prize Money and Course Record Bonuses."

- Need something to do this weekend? Voting is an option. Saturday is the last day to cast an absentee ballot in person at the city registrar’s office, which will be open that day from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The office is in City Hall at 715 Princess Anne St.
