Elections charter change to come back in November

No vote tonight on the proposal to ask the General Assembly for permission to change the city charter to require the electorate, not the remaining council members, to fill vacancies on this governing body.

Councilman George Solley wanted to look at whether the elections requirement should cover the mayor, too (Right now, if he leaves the council, the vice mayor takes his place…should you get to elect your new mayor?).

In addition, city resident Clyde Matthews, a government teacher, suggested that we’ve got too many elections, anyway, so why add more?

"I would certainly put my trust in the other members of the City Council to appoint an unexpired term," he said.
