Dec. 16 could be election day in Fredericksburg

The Circuit Court will eventually have to set the date for a special election to fill the Commonwealth’s Attorney seat left vacant after Charles Sharp’s appointment as a Circuit Court judge, but the city is requesting that the election be held Dec. 16.

It’s too late to hold the election with the Nov. 4 general election, and voting machines have to go on a 30-day lockdown after that, so this is the earliest it can happen.

Voter Registrar Juanita Pitchford said it’s not clear yet what the filing deadline will be for candidates, and none have filed yet.

She did pass along another election-related note: When you go to the polls Nov. 4, the paper voter rolls will be replaced with electronic poll books. These are laptop computers that are supposed to make the search for voter names quicker and easier.
