Council appointment process taking shape
UPDATE: Add William Street wine shop owner Kyle Snyder to the list of Ward I candidates. I am still working to confirm at least three other names I have heard of potential candidates, so this could get interesting.
UPDATE: City Manager Phil Rodenberg said the council has set a deadline of Aug. 22 for receiving new applications for the Ward 1 council seat. Council members are hoping to vote on the appointment at their Sept. 23 meeting. Tomorrow night, they’ll discuss a plan for the appointment process. Anyone interested in the job should call City Clerk Mary Smith at 540/372-1010.
Several city residents have shown interest in filling the Ward I vacancy that will be left after Marvin Dixon resigns. I’m in the process of confirming some other names, but in addition to John E. Moss, who announced his interest on Friday, local blogger Bryan Metts (who has applied twice to join the Planning Commission) sent an e-mail to council members yesterday indicating his interest.
I heard a few reports late last week that the council had already "hand-picked" Dixon’s successor, and those don’t seem to be true (In fact, the name I heard isn’t even among the list of those I understand have applied.).
"We’ve not talked about anybody yet," Mayor Tom Tomzak said this morning.
Tomzak said the council is putting together an application process for candidates.
Applicants will submit their resumes and answer a list of questions in writing. They’ll then sit down for 30-minute interviews before the council makes its choice. All of this–the written applications, the interviews and the vote–will be public.
