As 2007 slips out the door

It’s a dead newsroom this morning, and things aren’t much different around downtown. Newspapers have piled up in front of City Hall and the School Board building, and walking around, about the only activities I stumbled upon were city workers setting up for First Night and Kyle Snyder doing demo work for Kybecca’s latest project at William and Charles streets: a wine bar with outdoor seating under a heat-radiating awning (more on that later).

I took one last look at the corner of Charlotte and Caroline streets to see if anyone had moved dirt for the hotel that is supposed to open there in March 2009, but it doesn’t look like anyone has to worry about construction there interfering with First Night.

If you’re in a “year-in-review” sort of mood, Matt Kelly has posted a list of 2007 happenings over on his blog. There’s even a poll that asks you to give the City Council a grade.

Thanks to all who’ve read this blog this year. In 2008, I’m hoping to make City Beat a little livelier, with more photos, more video, more documents and, if you’re so inclined, more discussion. There sure will be plenty to talk about.

Just catching up on the posts, and by coincidence when I walked by the old Police Records building this afternoon one can’t help but notice the back room where the servers for all the PD’s computer systems were is mostly rubble. The bulk of the building is still standing, but by the size of the machinery there I wouldn’t give it much more time. Probably be gone by the time you and council are back from Ohio.
