Council wants courts downtown

The City Council voted unanimously tonight to approve this resolution. So now, the city staff will spend the next 180 days negotiating an agreement to redevelop the post office site on Princess Anne Street in part as new city courts.

Several city groups had urged the council to vote this way, and the city manager weighed in here.

You can read more about this in tomorrow’s paper, but one of the questions the council still has to answer is how to pay for the new courts, which could cost more than $60 million.

New tax revenue from developments at Celebrate Virginia could be a possibility in a few years, and the city also might sell the current site of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court to offset some of the cost.

Mayor Tom Tomzak didn’t rule out asking a certain fat fellow dressed in red for help.

“I hope Santa Claus brings a big check to the City Council this Christmas,” he said.
