Latest on the downtown hotel
As the Oct. 31 closing deadline for the city’s sale of the corner of Caroline and Charlotte streets to hotel developers Rich Palmer, Barry Gosnell and Tommy Mitchell approaches, the group reports the following:
Tommy Mitchell, Barry Gosnell, and Rich Palmer, the principals of the Courtyard by Marriott project being developed in the heart of downtown Fredericksburg at the corner of Caroline and Charlotte Streets, announced today that they have selected G.L.M.G. General Contractors of Fredericksburg to construct the hotel. The G.L.M.G. team will be directed by Hunter Greenlaw, Don Leake and Gary Pugh. G.L.M.G. has been in business in Fredericksburg for over 33 years and has constructed a number of hotel, commercial and industrial projects in the area. They are currently nearing completion of the Wilson Building on Caroline Street in the historic district.
The unique and upscale 98 room hotel will feature meeting and conference space, an indoor pool and spa, an exercise room, a casual restaurant focusing on breakfast, and a four story atrium with integral bar opening onto an outdoor patio. Its exterior concept was designed by James O. McGhee Architects, also of Fredericksburg. The principals will close on the land purchase from the City of Fredericksburg October 30th and start construction shortly thereafter. The hotel will be operated by Palmer-Gosnell Management, Inc. for Inns of Historic Fredericksburg, LLC under a franchise agreement with Marriott. Opening is scheduled for early spring 2009.
