Teardowns and McMansions

I’ll come back to this in the paper sometime soon, but I wanted to point it out since it was talked about last night at the council meeting.

Vice Mayor Kerry Devine said she wants the city to start work now to craft an ordinance to address the trend of tearing down homes in modest neighborhoods and replacing them with larger houses that are out of character with their neighbors.

The draft of the new Comprehensive Plan states that this is something the city wants to discourage in the future (see p. 47 of the PDF linked above), but that plan won’t likely be approved by the council until this fall.

Devine said she’d like work on this issue to start before the plan is approved, so that the city can have something in place before more neighborhoods are affected by what some consider out-of-character development.

“Almost every neighborhood these days seems to have their own version of the Big Ugly,” Devine said. “You don’t want it to become a town of teardowns.”

The council didn’t take any formal action on the proposal, but referred it to city planners so they could start working on it.
