You won’t find it online this morning, but Erik Nelson has an op-ed in the print edition of today’s Free Lance-Star responding to Paul O’Neill’s letter about the state of historic preservation in the city. Nelson, the staff liaison for the Architectural Review Board, lays out his view of how the local ordinances that govern preservation are supposed to work, and what they can and cannot govern. The application and enforcement of these ordinances has been criticized by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities in its listing of Fredericksburg as one of the state’s most endangered historical sites. That criticism started with local residents who nominated the city for the list.
