That one-way street proposal…

…has been put off until probably sometime this fall. Midway through last night’s marathon meeting, Councilman Marvin Dixon suggested that the council table the idea for a while, since his intention in suggesting it in the first place was to replace the 38 parking spaces the city will lose when it closes the public lot at the foot of Charlotte Street. That was originally supposed to happen after St. Patrick’s Day, but with no plan in place for what to do with the lot (which is eventually supposed to be part of a riverfront park), council members decided to keep it open at least through the summer.

Plenty of people weighed in on the one-way idea at the hearing, though. There was pretty much one opinion: Adding more one-way streets to downtown is a bad idea. Some folks talked about how confusing it is to navigate the one-way streets Fredericksburg already has. Others worried about the impact on their businesses, and said the move would be bad for tourists who are unfamiliar with how to get around town.
