What’s in a name?

Should the name of the mother of our first president be added to the moniker of that great big traffic jam otherwise known as the Falmouth Bridge?

Stafford County has asked Fredericksburg’s advice before it votes on a request to rename the U.S. 1 Bypass bridge over the Rappahannock River the “Mary Washington—Falmouth Bridge.”

City Council members didn’t seem too interested in associating Mary with the traffic congestion that overtakes the bridge for much of the day, or in changing an already well-established bridge name.

But they did ask the Memorials Commission to at least consider the idea, along with any other suggestions they have for the bridge name. That’s supposed to happen sometime in the next 45 days.
