2013 is the year of the teacher

Gov. Bob McDonnell has declared 2013 The Year of the Teacher. There aren’t a lot of specifics on what, exactly, that means, except that this declaration shows his continuing “commitment to highlighting the significant contributions our teachers make every day.”

The initiative does include a contest to recognize good teachers–Virginia residents are asked to send 100-word essays about inspiring teachers. You can email your essay to by Jan. 30.

And let us know which local teachers inspire you. Feel free to shoot me an email, or to comment below.

McDonnell followed up the declaration with some new plans for Virginia schools, including bringing Teach for America to the commonwealth. The New York Times had a story about that program yesterday.

McDonnell also hopes to boost teacher pay, simplify school report cards and add flexibility to the Standards of Quality rules.
