UMW Board of Visitors Names New Rector, Renews Hurley’s Contract

The University of Mary Washington’s Board of Visitors named Pamela J. White as its newest rector last week during the board’s annual retreat, according to a university press release.

White will succeed Daniel K. Steen, who served as rector of the board since July 2010.

The board also named Holly T. Cuellar as vice rector and Xavier R. Richardson as secretary.

Each of the three appointees will serve a two-year term from 2012 to 2014.

White, a 1974 UMW alumna, is a trial judge in the Circuit Court of Baltimore City, Md.

Cuellar, a 1989 UMW alumna, is a political consultant who has served in the Office of the Virginia Attorney General.

Richardson is executive vice president of Corporate Development and Community Affairs for Mary Washington Healthcare and president of Mary Washington Hospital and Stafford Hospital foundations.

Also during the retreat, the board unanimously renewed President Richard V. Hurley’s contract through June 30, 2015.

Hurley, UMW’s ninth president, assumed the position on July 1, 2010 and was previously  interim president from April 1 to June 30, 2010 after the departure of UMW’s eighth president, Judy Hample, and once before that in 2007 after William Frawley, the university’s seventh president was fired.
