King George School Board approves lease with Smoot Library

King George County’s old middle school off Dahlgren Road will be home to the L.E. Smoot Memorial Library for at least 18 months.

The King George School Board this evening approved a lease that would enable the library to relocate to the former middle school while its facility off Kings Highway receives renovations and a 17,000-square-foot addition.

The next step is for School Board Chairwoman Renee Parker and Smoot Library Board of Trustees Chair Tina Sisson to sign the lease. The School Board owns the former middle school, which has been vacant since the summer of 2009.

“Right now, this is a win-win situation for the county,” School Board member Dennis Paulsen said. “Our school is sitting dormant. The longer a building sits empty, the worse it gets.”
