Stafford School Board member takes issue with calendar proposal
Stafford County School Board member Patricia Mancini had no comment when I called her last month for a story on the proposed 2012-13 school calendar. But Mancini had plenty to say about the issue at a School Board meeting last week.
A committee of parents and administrators has recommended starting the 2012-13 school year a week before Labor Day, even though the School Board has rejected similar proposals for the past two years.
“I want to put a limit on how many times we revisit the same item year after year and spend this much time on items,” Mancini said. “And I would like to pass a resolution that we can’t keep voting on the same thing year after year till some people get what they want. We’ve already voted on this twice and spent an inordinate amount of time on it. Everybody’s presented their views over and over the last two years. So I don’t want to have to visit this again.”
She made her comments after School Board Chairwoman Patricia Healy asked the School Board if they wanted to discuss the calendar at a work session before its May 24 meeting. It now appears the School Board will talk about the calendar at its annual summer retreat, which hasn’t been scheduled.
