UMW President cleared of allegations of waste
A state agency has dismissed a complaint that University of Mary Washington President Judy Hample wasted thousands of dollars of state money on new bookshelves for Brompton, the UMW president’s official residence.
Someone anonymously called the state employee fraud, waste and abuse hot line–administered by the Division of State Internal Audit–to report the expense. The university paid $28,000 to replace bookshelves at Brompton.
In a letter to UMW rector Nanalou Sauder dated March 1, State Internal Auditor John A. Spooner wrote that the allegation is unsubstantiated. Hample had the authority to authorize the purchase with money in Brompton’s maintenance budget, according to the letter.
The Free Lance-Star received the letter today after filing a Virginia Freedom of Information Act Request.
Hample is resigning June 30 after two years on the job. She said her reason for leaving is personal.
