Polar Bear Plunge raises thousands
Some brave Caroline County residents plunged into an icy lake at noon today to raise money for those who cannot afford heating in their homes.
Polar Bear Plunge was held at the main beach in Lake Land’Or Saturday.
Early estimates indicate about $19,000 was raised through the plunge.
The event was organized by Wright’s Chapel United Methodist Church and St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church.
Each participating church keeps the money its members raise to use in its emergency assistance programs.
Money raised by plungers not affiliated with a participating church goes to a community organization that helps those in need.
Western Caroline Supervisor Jeff Black took the plunge along with about 30 others.
Last week, the Board of Supervisors approved a donation of $1,000 toward the cause.
