K.G. deputy killed in crash
An off-duty King George County deputy was killed in a two-vehicle crash yesterday.
According to Sgft. Thomas Molnar of the Virginia State Police, troopers responded to the intersection of U.S. 301 and State Route 623 in King George for an accident around 2:48 p.m. Sunday.
Molnar said the driver of a 2000 Saturn station wagon failed to yield the right-of-way at a stop sign and was struck by a 2005 Nissan Altima. The impact caused the Saturn to overturn before coming to a rest, Molnar said.
The Saturn was traveling westbound on Route 623 and the Nissan was traveling northbound on U.S. 301 at the time of the crash, Molnar said.
The driver of the Saturn, 54-year-old Sharon B. Zwicker of Pine Hill Road in King George, died at the scene. She was wearing a seat belt.
She had been a deputy with the King George Sheriff’s Office since 1982.
The female driver and male passenger in the Nissan are from Maryland, and both suffered minor injuries and were assessed at the scene by emergency medical technicians, Molnar said. They were both wearing seat belts.
The left lanes of both northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 301 were closed to allow for the investigation, Molnar said.
The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team and the King George County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the on-going investigation.
