Mewborn reinstated as JV football coach
Nathaniel Mewborn has been reinstated as the Caroline High School junior varsity football coach, said Assistant Superintendent Eric Cunningham today.Mewborn stepped down last month following a dispute with a student on a school bus that was captured on videotape. The student’s mother filed an assault and battery charge against Mewborn last week, but it was dismissed in Caroline Juvenile and Domestic Relations court on Monday. After Commonwealth’s Attorney Tony Spencer viewed the tape, he said he suggested that charges be filed against the student. He also commended Mewborn for diffusing a potentially dangerous situation.Spencer said the student, a junior who wasn’t on the team, assaulted Mewborn before the coach wrestled him into a seat on the bus. The boy’s mother saw the tape as well and denied her son assaulted the coach.Spencer said he gives Mewborn “leeway” for exchanging curse words with the student afterward because it was such a volatile situation.
Mewborn has also returned to his position as a math teacher, Cunningham said.Steve Swanton had taken over as the junior varsity head coach. The JV Cavaliers are 3-0 entering tonight’s game at Spotsylvania.–Taft Coghill Jr.
