Update: U.S 1 lanes open after Caroline crash, spill

From VDOT:
UPDATE: All lanes of U.S. 1 in Caroline at Ladysmith Road are now open. The final lane to open, the right lane of northbound U.S. 1, re-opened at 8:42 a.m
From State Police:
At 5:23 a.m. this morning, June, 9, Virginia State Police Trooper D. L. Mitchell responded to a two vehicle crash on Route 1 at the intersection of Route 639, Ladysmith Road, in Caroline County.
The crash occurred when the driver of a 2004 Mack tractor-trailer traveling northbound on Route 1, failed to yield-the-right-of-way at a red light to a 2007 Ford Mustang traveling eastbound on Route 639. After striking the Mustang, the tractor-trailer driver lost control causing the tractor-trailer to overturn onto the passenger side spilling approximately 24,000 pounds of asphalt.

The driver of the Ford, Patrick J. Samples, 37, of Montpelier, suffered minor injures and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.  Samples was wearing his safety belt.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Kyle L. Royer, 26, of Richmond, was not injured in the crash and was wearing his safety belt. Royer was traveling from Richmond to Caroline at the time of the crash and was charged with failure to stop at a red light.  http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?000+cod+46.2-833
The Caroline County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control during the investigation.  All lanes were closed to allow for clean up and removal of the vehicles and asphalt.  At 8:00 a.m., all lanes southbound and the left lane northbound were reopened to traffic.  Shortly before 8:30 a.m, the crash scene was cleared and all lanes were reopened.  There were minor delays through the area during the investigation.

THREE LANES OF U.S. 1 NOW OPEN IN CAROLINE

Only right lane of northbound U.S. 1 remains closed at Ladysmith Road following crash

FREDERICKSBURG –Three lanes of U.S. 1 have re-opened in Caroline County in the vicinity of Ladysmith Road (Route 639), following a vehicle crash and a diesel and asphalt spill that had completely closed the roadway at approximately 5:30 a.m.

Both southbound lanes re-opened at 7:50 a.m. The left lane of northbound U.S. 1 re-opened at 8:17 a.m.

The crash resulted in a small spill of diesel fuel and asphalt on.U.S. 1. Since diesel fuel can cause asphalt pavement to deteriorate more rapidly over time, Virginia Department of Transportation officials will assess any permanent damage to the roadway and schedule future repairs. The section of U.S. 1 affected by the spill had recently been paved, with new lane markings.

No delays are currently reported. Virginia State Police and the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office provided traffic control throughout the incident.

Motorists can find real-time information about traffic incidents and congestion on VDOT’s 24-hour travel information website, www.511Virginia.org. 511Virginia is also available by calling 511 from any telephone in Virginia.
